DEER VELVET has been a major part of Asian medicine for over two thousand years.
Today it is still the
second most important traditional medicine by volume. Modern
science is beginning to understand and
validate some of the traditional understandings
about velvet.
Stamina & Performance from Deer Velvet
Many top New Zealand athletes (including world champions) use Deer Velvet and
are convinced that it
enhances their training, development, performance and recovery.
They include:
World No 1 tri-athlete Hamish Carter, "I really believe it helps my
training, energy and
endurance. I feel better and recover faster when taking velvet".
Jannene Harker, World surf ski champion 1996-98, also represented NZ in Judo,
Water Polo and Surf
Lifesaving. After she began taking velvet Jannene noted
improvements in strength,
intensity and
immunity. "I can definitely recommend
deer velvet to anyone wishing to compete in sport or
maintain a healthy lifestyle".
Sir Bob Charles, arguably the most successful left-hander to play professional
golf, has been taking
velvet for over 10 years. At 65 he believes that it
benefits his general health and energy levels and "in particular has been
supporting healthy joint function".
Perhaps more importantly these observations are supported by recent scientific research…
Scientific Research
Modern Research supports the concept of velvet as a dietary supplement.
Enhanced immune system
Recent New Zealand research shows that Velvet stimulates the immune system,
increases white cell production and has a positive effect on physical training,
stamina and performance. Russian research has shown that Velvet has
beneficial effects on blood pressure, stress and stamina.
Agrisearch Invermay
(Dunedin NZ) has shown that velvet stimulates the production of white blood
cells adding scientific support to the extensive anecdotal evidence of velvet
stimulating the body’s immune system.
Anti-inflammatory effect
Velvet has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory and clinical
experiments.
Athletic performance
Clinical trials at the University of Otago Human Performance Centre demonstrated
that muscle strength and endurance were enhanced by the taking of velvet.
Another trial demonstrated reduced levels of creatine kinase, suggesting
reduced muscle damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Velvet benefit health?
Velvet is a tonic to the blood. With healthier blood you benefit from better
circulation, more nutrients and oxygen delivered to every part of the body and
more efficient elimination of waste and toxins. Velvet is not a drug producing a
specific medicinal effect. It is a natural product of normal healthy animals.
It simply makes us more healthy thereby improving our immune system and
the performance of every part of body including general health, fitness and stamina.
What is Deer Velvet Antler?
"Velvet" is deer antler in its growing state. (In the nutritional context it does
not include the velvety coating on the outside.) Mature deer antler is hard, dense
bone which can typically weigh 15kgs or more. Each spring the hard antler is
cast (drops off) and a new antler grows again within 4 months. In its growing
state it is packed with unique nutrients and substances which enable an
extraordinary bone development to occur.
What does Velvet contain?
Scientists have identified at least 12 minerals and elements, 30 free amino
acids and many other compounds including growth factor agents and hormone
like substances. These support some of the extraordinary values attributed to
velvet. Clearly, for a substance like deer antler to grow, very special nutritional
and other agents are required. Calcium levels are very high but the calcium is
in a soft form prior to the antler calcifying.
An Aphrodisiac?
Mention 'velvet' to many people and they immediately think 'aphrodisiac'.
Further investigation suggests that this concept has substantial validity.
Better health leads to increased vitality, stamina and better performance
in so many ways! Indeed many users of deer velvet have even reported
such benefits for themselves. The following qualities are traditionally given
to velvet and/or verified by modern research:
- The gonadotrophic effect - in experiments on small animals velvet
has been shown to increase the size of the sexual organs, (both male
and female); - Velvet is traditionally prescribed for sexual and fertility problems (both
male and female) including 'health of the sperms'; - Velvet has been shown to increase stamina and performance in scientific
studies, qualities supported by leading international athletes;
In short, velvet can be considered an aphrodisiac as a result of improved
health and vitality.
Velvet as an Adaptogen?
An Adaptogen is defined as a natural substance which takes an organism's
biological activity toward normal, thus enhancing it's ability to adapt to stress
(including disease, degeneration (ageing) and toxins.) This concept can be best
understood by considering velvet as a tonic to the blood. With improved blood
function, aberrant biological functions tend toward normal simply because the
body is functioning better.
Dosage Recommendation
We recommend taking one or two capsules of VELSEI GOLD a day.
Velvet can have a stimulating effect so is best taken earlier in the day to avoid
high energy levels at night.
In Traditional Asian Medicine, typical doses are prescribed at up to an equivalent
of four capsules a day. Toxicity studies have shown no harmful effects from
taking velvet.
Some people feel benefits from taking velvet almost immediately however many
health problems arise over many years so it can take some time to restore
normal health.
